Two high scoring games to start off with; the very recent one going down to the wire. The third tie is all set to kick off on the 7th of April at Rajkot between the Gujarat Lions and The Kolkata Knight Riders. In Suresh Raina, the Gujarat Lions have a pragmatic leader who led them into the qualifiers last season.

GL vs KKR Match Preview

The Lions released 8 players from their last season’s squad; Dale Steyn being the only overseas player. Injuries have become quite the norm this season and the Lions weren’t spared either. Ravindra Jadeja will be out for at least a couple of weeks due to a finger injury. The dynamic allrounder now tops the ICC test rankings for bowlers and is the best fielder in the world bar none. West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is also expected to miss the initial stages due to a hamstring injury. The two-time purple cap winner injured himself during the Big Bash League and is yet to reach optimum fitness.

The positive though for the Lions has to be the acquisition of Jason Roy, the English opener. Roy has been in top notch form and if he gets going there are very few in international cricket who can stop his onslaught. The Surrey lad has an impressive strike rate of 144.49 in T20s and being acquired for only 1 crore rupees he can easily be the steal of the season. Aaron Finch, James Faulkner, Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum and Andrew Tye were all retained by the Lions. Ishan Kishan will be the man with the gloves behind the stumps. The Jharkhand dasher might open the innings with Jason Roy, followed by McCullum, Karthik, Finch and Smith.

James Faulkner’s a limited over specialist and he’ll walk into the Lion’s squad as the 4th overseas player. Dhawal Kulkarni and Praveen Kumar are the probable fast bowling options, with Shadab Jakati and Shivil Kaushik completing the eleven.

  • 5 players from the lions squad scored more than 300 runs last season. Suresh Raina (399), Aaron Finch (393), Brendon McCullum (354), Dinesh Karthik (335), Dwayne Smith(324).
  • Dhawal Kulkarni finished 4th in the race for the purple cap with 18 scalps and Dwayne Bravo with 17.
  • SURESH RAINA has scored more than 350 runs in all the 9 seasons so far. Raina has played 147 IPL games, the most by any player, scored 4098 runs at 33.59 with a strike rate of 138.58.

Kolkata Knight Riders Team Preview

Gautam Gambhir has orchestrated the Knight Riders to two IPL titles and with some smart spending at the auction this year the unit looks more ominous. The Knight Riders were quick to pounce on the ace New Zealand pacer, after he was released by the SunRisers. Boult was secured at 5 crore rupees and Chris Woakes was added to the squad with a mammoth 4.2 being spent on the English allrounder. The two pacers are likely to start against the Lions. Chris Lynn the marauder from down under will be a default inclusion and the enigmatic Sunil Narine will complete the enabled overseas players. Colin De Grandhomme has been called in for the banned Andre Russell.

Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey will be a part of the top order; the former completes the wicket- keeping void and the latter’s a flamboyant batsman. After an impressive test debut against Australia last month, Kuldeep Yadav would certainly be an automatic pick.

CHRIS LYNN: Lynn’s been associated with the Knight Riders since 2014, but surprisingly has played only 4 games for them. He had an outstanding BBL 2016-17 where he absolutely pummelled the bowlers to all corners of the park. If that willow finds the meat of the bat, the ball will have a lot of air time and distance to travel; also the crowd will have a lot of catching to do. 309 runs in 5 games at 154.50 with a strike rate of 177.79, Chris Lynn is a prime nominee for the player of the match.

DINESH KARTHIK: Karthik had a Bradman-esque Vijay Hazare Trophy where he piled up 607 runs at 86.71. With the ability to turn accumulator and explode into an attacker at will, the Tamil Nadu batsman can effortlessly turn the game on it’s head. He’s certainly eyeing a national team call and we’ll see a more determined Karthik stacking up some telling knocks.

GL vs KKR Match Prediction / Who will Win?

GL have a cluster of fearless hitters, but their bowling seems insipid without the services of Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo. The star-studded batting line-up though is capable of clobbering even the mightiest attacks and that might just do the trick for them.

KKR too have a stellar batting line-up but without their gigantic allrounders, Andre Russell (who is serving a ban for a doping code-violation) and Shakib Al Hasan, (who’ll be joining the team after the Lankan tour) the side does look beatable.

It’s going be a heavy scoring game yet again and due to their power hitting ability, the GUJARAT LIONS might come out victorious.
